National Prosecco Week and the Italian Genio with celebrity chef Lidia Bastianich – July 18, 2023

Did you know there’s a whole week dedicated to prosecco? Now you know. There are so many wonderful proseccos, so no wonder it needs a complete week!

I recently attended National Prosecco Week, Prosecco DOC Consortium where I participated in “Celebrate National Prosecco Week and the Italian Genio” which was led by the celebrity Chef, Emmy award-winning public television host, a best‐selling cookbook author Lidia Bastianich at TAO’s The Beach at Dream Downtown. It was such a memorable experience that I’ll never forget!

I arrived at The Beach at Dream Downtown where servers were handing out prosecco and small bites. I nibbled a bit before the seminar.

When I got to Lidia Bastianich’s seminar, she did a presentation on the most popular sparkling wine in the world and its territory through a tasting of Prosecco DOC and Prosecco DOC Rosé. During the seminar, she showed us how to create tasty and delicious cocktails like this summer’s popular drink the Hugo Spritz and Negroni Sbagliato. This was truly unique occasion to understand the Denomination’s history and philosophy, and its increasing popularity, especially in the US market, which represents the highest-volume market with more than 134 million bottles imported in 2022.

One of the most interesting things mentioned during the night was how Prosecco is protected by the Italian government and why we see the labels by the cap. The differences between Prosecco and Champagne. Lastly, how DOC sparkling is further classified following the residual sugar content: Brut Nature, Extra Brut. Brut. Extra Dry, Dry, and Demi-sec.

Meeting Lidia was an amazing yet memorable experience. I told her how much my family loves her and she insisted we take a picture together. I would never ask! It’s perfect. I love it.
