Mercer Winery Wine Funday Picks

I’m always looking for new Sunday Funday wine fun. My recent pick was Mercer Estates wines.  Mercer Estates is a family owned and operated winery in Southeast Washington State.  Their family has been growing grapes in this location since 1972 – making us the first to plant vinifera in the Horse Heaven Hills. They take great pride in their grape growing and winemaking endeavors.

2015 Mercer Estates Malbec – SRP $19.99, 14.8% alc., 950 cases, Blend:  78% Malbec and 22% Cabernet Sauvignon – Flavors of blackberry, coffee, sweet vanilla and baking spices with hints of wet stone.  This inky dark wine is a balance of ripe concentrated fruit and nuanced complexity from barrel ageing.  On the nose, concentrated ripe blackberry is enveloped in notes of coffee and sweet vanilla.  A hint of wet stone lifts the fruit while adding alluring complexity.  The Horse Heaven Hill’s dusty tannins add great texture and weight and a long, lengthy finish.

2015 Mercer Estates Sharp Sisters Red Blend – SRP $19.99, 2,400 cases, 14.8% alc., Blend:  29% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Syrah, 18% Merlot, 14% Petit Verdot, 10% Grenache and 2% Carignane.  This blend shows a beautiful nose of blackberry preserves and plums with notes of sage and sweet vanilla.  The ripe fruit combined with sleek tannins create a wine that is broad and powerful yet elegant.  The ripe flavors in the mouth lead into a soft, lingering finish with a touch of bright acidity that leaves you wanting more.

2016 Mercer Estates Sauvignon Blanc – SRP $14.99, 456 cases, 12.5% alc., 100% Sauvignon Blanc.  Aromas of grapefruit zest, lychee and fresh cut hay are abundant on the nose.   The grapefruit carries through in the palate along with gooseberry and citrus notes.  Capturing the fruit at its peak ripeness has resulted in a wine with both ripe fruit and racy, mouth-watering acidity.  Clean, crisp, light bodied and refreshing.
