Symington Family Estates Halloween Candy Pairings

When all the children out and about getting all of their candies, I decided to have my own Halloween candy tasting of my own. I paired some of the Halloween classics with rich Port wines from the Symington Family Estates.  Here is the full rundown of my Halloween night:

Warre’s Otima 10-Year-Old Tawny Port with Starburst

Symington Family Estates‘ somm recommended to pair this with the beloved Dots, but I usually find them too sugary for my liking. So I chose something else that was fruity sweet and wasn’t pure sugar.  A bright nose full of fresh nuts alongside a delicate palate of dried fruit make Otima 10 Year Old Tawny Port ($26) the perfect complement to the mixed fruit flavors of the Starbursts. Whether your favorite is cherry, strawberry, lemon, or orange, the refreshing acidity of this lighter, modern style of Port wine makes it easy to try them all.

Hints of blackcurrant and plum and a muscular palate make Dow’s 2011 Late Bottled Vintage Port ($24) and KIT KAT® a to-die-for combination. Dow’s trademark drier style comes through, making this wine the perfect pairing with the candy’s crispy wafer and smooth milk chocolate. Unlike other Port houses, Dow’s only produces Late Bottled Vintage Port from the best of years. Breaking off a piece of that KIT KAT® bar is almost satisfying as popping open this unusually elegant and powerful port.

It’s not Halloween without the crispety, crunchety, peanut-buttery taste of a Butterfinger®, and we can think of no better wine to drink alongside than Cockburn’s Special Reserve ($18).

A luscious style of Port, bursting with bright red cherry fruit, and Cockburn’s signature mellow cask-finished tones enhancing its smoothness, make for a devilishly delicious pairing as the creamy milk chocolate base gives way to a peanut buttery palate.

Overall, all were sweet and were the trick to my treats.
